New call for applications to the Dr. Ruth Cardoso Fellowship Program Versão em português
FAPESP has published a call for applications to the Dr. Ruth Cardoso Fellowship Program for visiting researchers and professors at Columbia University, in New York City (FAPESP Call no. 17/2009). Submissions of candidate names will be accepted up through January 15, 2010.
The program is a joint initiative of FAPESP, Columbia University, the Fulbright Commission for Educational Exchange between the United States and Brazil and the Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES, Coordination of the Advancement of Higher Education).
The objectives of the program include increasing awareness, among academics and researchers at the university level in the United States, of the research conducted by scientists working in the areas of social science or the human sciences in Brazil, as well as strengthening ties, expanding the dialogue and deepening the mutual knowledge of and understanding between the two cultures and societies.
The fellowship pays homage to the memory of Professor Ruth Corrêa Leite Cardoso, who was a Fulbright Scholar at Columbia University in 1988 and distinguished herself in the academic world in Brazil, especially in the areas of social science and the human sciences.
The program outlines a one-year fellowship, paid out monthly (US$5,000/month) over a period of nine months. Fellowship recipients will also receive economy-class air fare and an additional US$2,000 to cover moving expenses, as well as free housing in a dormitory on the Columbia University campus, or equivalent, and health care coverage during their stay in the United States.
Fellowship holders will also have access to the facilities and services offered by Columbia University—office space, Internet access, laboratories and libraries—as well as being provided with any other means necessary to carrying out their teaching or research activities.
Candidates must have earned their doctoral degrees prior to 2006, be of Brazilian nationality (without dual citizenship in the United States and Brazil) and be an accredited professor or advisor in a postgraduate program recognized by CAPES.
Among other requirements, candidates must hold full-time academic positions, defined as professorships, advisorships or co-advisorships (of dissertations or theses) and fellowships in research projects in social science or the human sciences.
Preference will be given to candidates working in the areas of Brazilian history, anthropology or sociology, with a focus on contemporary social movements.
