The São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) and The Inter-American Network of Academies of Sciences (IANAS) Announce Funding Opportunities for Visiting Scientists, Post-Doctoral Fellowshi
1 Introduction
FAPESP and IANAS invite researchers, nominated by the National Academies of Sciences of IANAS. to submit to FAPESP through IANAS, proposals for funding under the following FAPESP regular funding schemes:
a) Visiting Scientists,
b) Young Investigator Research Grant,
c) Post-Doctoral Fellowships
(See detailed description of these modalities below)
FAPESP is interested in supporting outstanding candidates in all fields of knowledge. In all cases the research will be developed in higher education and research institutions in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. .
This announcement is made within the scope of the Memorandum of Understanding between FAPESP and IANAS published at www.fapesp.br/en/7015. This announcement is being disseminated simultaneously by FAPESP and IANAS at: www.fapesp.br/7024 and www.ianas.org, respectively.
2 Types of funding offered in this announcement
2.1 Visiting Scientist Research Grant
The Visiting Researcher Grant is intended to cover all or part of the expenses for the visit of an experienced researcher, from an institution located outside the State of Sao Paulo (foreigner or from other Brazilian State), to a Sao Paulo State research institution, for a continuous period from 2 weeks to 12 months.
Requirements: The candidates for the visit must hold a Doctorate degree and a permanent position in a research institution in the country of origin.
Funding available for: Airfare and stipend in Brazil, level depending on seniority.
How to apply: Applications must be made by a host researcher associated with a university or research institution in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Brazilian nationality is not a requirement and applications can be submitted in English.

2.2 Young Investigator Award
Outstanding young scientists who have a few years of outstanding post-doctoral experience can apply for a FAPESP Young Investigator Award. Brazilian nationality is not a requirement and applications can be submitted in English. Grants are for up to four years and may include a fellowship plus research funding for equipment, consumables, student fellowships, travel.
The Young Investigators Awards envisage the creation of opportunities for outstanding young researchers, especially in emerging research institutions in the State of São Paulo. Proposals of new research areas in traditional institutions are also eligible.
This Program is part of FAPESP's strategy to strengthen the State research institutions, favoring the creation of new research groups that will work on state-of-the-art areas that are internationally relevant and new to the state of São Paulo. The awarded grants, led by early-career investigators, must be scientifically sound in order to create new research groups in Institutions without research tradition or new research areas in traditional Institutions.
Requirements: The candidate must hold a Doctorate degree, a successful post-doctoral experience, and must demonstrate clear potential for scientific leadership in his field. A Young Investigator is an independent researcher and as such does not have a supervisor.
Funding available for: Fellowship stipend (R$ 6,339.00 per month), travel to and from Brazil for fellowship holder and his family, one additional fellowship month for relocation support, research equipment, consumables, research related travel, fellowships for undergraduate and doctoral students, 15% of the full grant value for incidental research related expenses. The award is for a duration of up to four years.

2.3 Post-doctoral fellowships
Persons holding, or who anticipate holding, a doctoral degree may receive funding to be Post-Doctoral Fellows at an approved institution within the state of Sao Paulo. Fellowships have duration of up to three years.
FAPESP’s Post-Doctoral fellowships are aimed at distinguished researchers with a recent Doctorate degree and a successful research track record. The fellowship holder will develop his research project in higher education and research institutions in the State of São Paulo.
Requirements: The candidates should have completed their doctoral programs no more than seven years prior to application and the proposed research project should be strongly linked to the work being developed by the proposed host group in Sao Paulo.
Funding available for: Fellowship stipend (R$ 5,578.00 per month), travel to and from Brazil for fellowship holder and his family, one additional fellowship month for relocation support, 15% of the fellowship value for small research related expenses. PD Fellowships are granted for 24 months and can be renewed for 12 months. When associated with some of FAPESP main projects (e.g. Thematic Projects, RIDCs, Young Investigator Awards or to any of the FAPEPS´s special Programs as BIOTA, BIOEN or PFPMCG), fellowships can last up to 48 months, provided it is within the term of the project to which it is linked. PD fellowships are not awarded for periods shorter than six months.
How to apply: Applications must be made by a supervising researcher associated with a university or research institution in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Brazilian nationality is not a requirement and applications can be submitted in English.

3 Eligibility and submission of Applications
In all cases the applicant must hold a Doctorate degree. Other requirements are described in Section 2. The Proposals, by scientists previously selected by the Academies of Science and forwarded by IANAS, must include, exclusively, the following documents:
a) Initial application must be made to the local national academy of sciences using the form in Annex I. The form must be accompanied by:
a.i) A biosketch (www.fapesp.br/5266) (www.fapesp.br/en/6351)
a.ii) A one page description of the research interests of the candidate.
a.iii) If contacts in the Research Institutions of São Paulo already exists name(s) and e-mails(s) of the Brazilian host.
4 Analysis and Selection
a) FAPESP will receive from IANAS the proposals from candidates pre-selected by the Academies of IANAS;
b) The proposals will be analyzed by way of a competitive process through FAPESP´s peer-review system, which will evaluate the merit and relevance of the project or research interest(s), the academic excellence of the candidate and the prospect of further enhancing the IANAS links with Brazil.
c) After the candidates, nominated by the Academies of Science and forwarded by IANAS, are selected, local host(s) will be identified with the help of the Academies, FAPESP, the Academy of Sciences of the State of São Paulo (ACIESP) and IANAS.
d) For Visiting Scientists and PosDocs the final research project will be submitted by the local host to FAPESP. For the Young Investigator Research Grant, the project will be submitted by the researcher to FAPESP.
5 Timeline
Call announced at FAPESP and IANAS web pages: September 14th , 2012
Closing date for proposals submission to FAPESP (pre-selected candidates by IANAS): February 4th , 2013
Successful proposals notification: June 28th, 2013.
Final results will be announced on both FAPESP (www.fapesp.br/7024) and IANAS web portals (www.ianas.org) and direct communication to the grantees.
