FAPESP and IANAS launch joint call for proposals Research may be in any field of knowledge and should be conducted at universities or research institutions in São Paulo State

FAPESP and the InterAmerican Network of Academies of Sciences (IANAS) launched a call for research proposals under the auspices of the cooperation agreement forged between the two institutions. The call is open to researchers nominated by the IANAS-affiliated national academies of sciences.

Research may be in any field of knowledge and should be conducted at universities or research institutions in São Paulo State.

Interested researchers must submit project proposals to the IANAS-affiliated academy of sciences in their country of origin, which will forward the proposals to the IANAS.

The research projects of candidates who are pre-selected by IANAS affiliates will be submitted to FAPESP for analysis. This analysis is based on scientific merit and utilizes ad hoc and peer evaluators from scientific committees to support the decisions of FAPESP.

FAPESP will fund the approved proposals through the Post-doctoral Fellowship, Young Investigators in Emerging Centers Award and Visiting Researcher Grant programs.

FAPESP grants post-doctoral fellowships to promising scientists who have obtained a doctorate within the last seven years. The Young Investigators in Emerging Centers Award offers the necessary fellowships and funding for a researcher to develop his/her project.

The Visiting Researcher Grant covers the expenses for experienced researchers associated with foreign or Brazilian research institutions to visit a research institution in São Paulo State for a period ranging from two weeks to 12 months.

This type of FAPESP funding allowed 240 foreign scientists to visit universities and research institutions in São Paulo State in 2011, which is an average of four researchers per week. Our goal is to gradually increase this number over the next few years.

Discovering scientific talents

In the opinion of Hernan Chaimovich, special aide to the scientific department of FAPESP, the partnership between FAPESP and the IANAS will allow both organizations to attain their own specific objectives, such as strengthening the national academies of sciences in South, Central and North America and the Caribbean; facilitating the discovery of scientific talents; and increasing cooperation and scientific integration in these regions.

“There is a huge information gap that prevents the best young scientists from countries in the region from conducting research,” comments Chaimovich when addressing Agência FAPESP.

“As national academies of science become aware of the research funding opportunities in their own region and participate in the process of indicating and selecting researchers from their countries, they strengthen and also help FAPESP to identify the best scientists that are not in the United States and Europe,” he evaluated.

The deadline for pre-selected candidates to submit proposals to FAPESP via the IANAS is February 4, 2013.
