FAPESP has a thriving portfolio of grants in the Life Sciences with expenditures in 2012 equivalent to US$ 300 million. 
 

Health Sciences receives the largest part of these funds, followed by Biology/Ecology and Agronomy/Veterinary. These present a wide array of opportunities for young investigators and senior scientists. Cell biology of cancer and model organisms, insect borne tropical diseases, Brazilian biodiversity and environmental challenges are the most frequent themes, together with modern life health problems, bio-economy and food and feed production chain. High standard research is conducted across the State with excellent infrastructure for field expeditions to all Brazilian biomes under study as well as several multiuser facilities for high trough put modern technologies addressing structural biology, cell biology and biochemical-molecular research. New areas, which are multidisciplinary, such as Systems and Synthetic Biology are recent to the State and opportunities to attract motivated investigators are a challenge. 
 

For young researchers FAPESP offers two programs: Post-Doctoral fellowships and the Young Investigator Awards (www.fapesp.br/en/5427 and www.fapesp.br/en/4479). Candidates are welcome from any country and Brazilian nationality is not a requirement. 
 

For outstanding, experienced researchers who have a permanent position outside Brazil, FAPESP offers the São Paulo Excellence Chairs (SPEC), a full grant for scientists willing spend not less than 12 weeks per year, for 5 years, leading a research project hosted in a university in the State of São Paulo.
