FAPESP and University of Warwick sign cooperation agreement Versão em português
Institutions will support joint research projects in several fields (Jones and Lafer at FAPESP's headquarters)
University of Warwick Pro Vice-Chancellor for Science, Engineering and Medicine Tim Jones and Senior Public Affairs and Policy Advisor for the University Alex Miles visited FAPESP on July 29 to sign a cooperation agreement. They were welcomed by Foundation President Celso Lafer, Vice-president Eduardo Moacyr Krieger, and Scientific Director Carlos Henrique de Brito Cruz.
Also discussed at the meeting was the potential development of joint projects between researchers associated with the British university and researchers in São Paulo State. The topics of potential interest highlighted by the Warwick representatives included synthetic biology, mathematics, automotive industry innovation, life sciences and expansion, and inclusion and mobility in metropolises.
“FAPESP is very interested in internationalization by establishing a network of collaboration between scientists in São Paulo and abroad, and very productive results have been achieved,” Lafer said.
The Foundation has more than 100 international science and technology cooperation agreements with research-sponsoring institutions, universities and companies in 20 countries.
“Research carried out in the United Kingdom is of high quality, and FAPESP’s broad collaboration with British institutions is very constructive and going quite well,” Brito Cruz said.
With the new agreement, FAPESP now collaborates on science and technology with 17 British universities. The British Council and the seven Research Councils of the United Kingdom (RCUK) are among the research-funding agencies with which FAPESP has signed agreements.
“This agreement represents the beginning of a strong and lasting relationship. FAPESP has the credibility and knowledge to promote joint work among scientists at Warwick and universities in São Paulo. It is an important partnership and is expected to produce excellent science,” said Jones.
The agreement between the two institutions offers up to 40,000 GBP per year for a period of five years to finance projects for terms of up to two years. The first call for proposals, published today, will accept research proposals until October 27.
Seven other institutions or university consortia from France, Argentina, Canada, Belgium, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and South Africa are taking part in this Call for Proposals, launched under the São Paulo Researcher in International Collaboration program (SPRINT).
SPRINT is a planning strategy by FAPESP to promote interaction between researchers in the state of São Paulo and abroad. It consists of the simultaneous announcement of opportunities for international collaboration four times a year, in January, April, July and October.
