SPRINT 3rd Edition 2014 - Guideline: University of Toronto
Specific requests for submission of proposals in partnership with researchers from the University of Toronto
FAPESP and the University of Toronto signed a Cooperation Agreement for Research on September 24, 2014, aiming to implement scientific and technological cooperation between researchers from Canada and from the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, through the funding of joint research projects.
Under the referred Agreement, as a first action to promote such collaboration, FAPESP and the University of Toronto will make public this Call for Proposals for the exchange of faculty and postdoctoral researchers, under the terms and conditions of the SPRINT 3th Edition 2014 (www.fapesp.br/en/9055) and hereinafter set forth.
1. Eligibility for University of Toronto applicants
1.1 Eligibility to submit proposals within the scope of this Call:
a. Faculty members at the University of Toronto who are eligible to hold research funding are eligible to submit proposals in response to this call.
1.2 Eligibility for the exchange activities within the scope of this Call:
a. Faculty members, and students under their supervision at the University of Toronto, are eligible to participate in exchange activities within the scope of this call.
2. Fields of knowledge
This Call for Proposals invites research proposals in fields relating to the topic of Global Cities.
3. Duration of the project for the exchange of researchers
The maximum duration of each project is up to 24 months. Under extenuating circumstances, a no-cost extension may be possible if requested jointly by the FAPESP-funded and UofT funded awardees within 3 months of the end-date of the award and agreed to by the University of Toronto and FAPESP.
4. Funding principles
FAPESP will provide funding of up to the equivalent of CAD$5,000.00 per proposal per year and the University of Toronto will provide funding of up to CAD$5,000.00 per proposal per year, for the duration of the grant to cover research-related mobility expenses, under the provisions of Clause 5 of the Scientific Cooperation Agreement established by the Parties (www.fapesp.br/en/8974).

First Stage: Mandatory Notice of Intent
Those wishing to apply to this opportunity must complete and submit the Notice of Intent Form and submit it by e-mail to keti.dzamova@utoronto.ca no later than 5 pm EST on Friday, December 5, 2014. Once submitted, applicants can begin or continue to work on the Full Proposal.
Second Stage: Full Proposal
The full proposal is comprised of the following elements:
a) Proposal Cover Form available for download HERE.
b) Curriculum Vitae of the Principal Investigators (PIs) and all collaborating researchers from Brazil and UofT in either: the FAPESP biosketch format (for Brazilians), or for UofT-based applicants, the most current Tri-Agency (SSHRC, NSERC, CIHR) CV downloaded into pdf format.
c) Proposed budget using the worksheet available HERE. The maximum amount is $5,000 CAD in year 1 and $5,000 CAD in year 2.
d) A Detailed Research Project Description, maximum ten (10) pages (excluding bibliography if included) to be assessed using the Selection Criteria listed below, shall include the following items:
i. Summary of the proposed project including expected results;
ii. Benefits to other projects: a description of the anticipated benefits from the proposed activities to the current project(s) for the Toronto PI and for the Brazilian PI respectively;
iii. Description of the expected academic gains for the project as a result of the proposed cooperation and exchange visits, details of the activities planned for the exchange, including a rationale for those activities, and the definition of the corresponding performance indicators;
iv. A description of particular activities that describe the impact of the exchange, such as seminars, short courses, visits to other institutions that carry out research activities in cognate areas, etc.;
v. A proposed timeline for the project (of not more than 24 months);
vi. A description of the potential future collaborations and outcomes that the researchers believe will be possible as a result of having undertaken the current proposed work and exchange activities.

- Proposals must be submitted in English
- Font: Times New Roman, 11 point (minimum)
- Margins: 2.5 cm on all sides
- Name of the UofT and Brazilian PI in the top left corner
- Pages numbered at the bottom right of each page.
- SELECTION CRITERIA: Given the Funding Principles described in Section 4, FAPESP and the University of Toronto anticipate funding approximately 5 awards. In order to identify the 5 strongest proposals, an internal peer review will occur once the Full Proposal deadline has passed. The internal peer review committee will assess each proposal according to the scientific merit and compelling elements covered by the following criteria:Focus Area (how relevant is the proposed focus area to the Global Cities theme of this Call).
o Project Design and Rationale (how clearly presented and justified is the design and basis for the collaboration)
o Trainee Involvement (are opportunities provided for students to engage in the collaboration? What are the anticipated benefits of student engagement to the project and for the students themselves?)
o Impact of Collaboration on Research Project (how strong is the link being between the proposed collaboration and current research project(s).)
o Capacity for future collaboration (what is the extent to which future collaborations are possible as a result of the proposed exchange activities.)
- PI Reporting after project completion: All UofT awardees must, as a condition of receiving an award under this call, complete a narrative report (of between 1 and 3 pages) that describes the outcomes and potential opportunities for future collaboration that evolved from their project. The report is due within 90 days of the end date of the award.
6. Submission of proposals to the University of Toronto
Submissions can only be accepted via My Research Applications: https://ppm-wd.utoronto.ca/irj/portal.
7. Result of the analysis
Final results will be announced on FAPESP (www.fapesp.br) and the University of Toronto (www.research.utoronto.ca) web portals and by means of a communication to the interested PIs.
8. Contract for selected projects by the University of Toronto
Selected proposals will subject to the conditions set forth in the Scientific Cooperation Agreement established by the Parties (www.fapesp.br/en/8974).
