SPRINT - 1st Edition 2017: Guidelines University of Melbourne

Specific requests for proposals submission from researchers of the University of Melbourne

FAPESP and the University of Melbourne (UNIMELB) signed a Cooperation Agreement for Research on March 21st, 2013, aiming to implement scientific and technological cooperation between researchers from UNIMELB, Australia and from the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil through the funding of joint research projects.

Under the referred Agreement, as an action to promote such collaboration, FAPESP and UNIMELB make public this Call for Proposals for the exchange of faculty and postdoctoral researchers, under the terms and conditions of the SPRINT 1st Edition 2017 (www.fapesp.br/sprint/call122017) and hereinafter set forth.

1. Eligibility from UNIMELB side

1.1 Eligibility to submit proposals within the scope of this Call:

a. The Principal Investigator (PI) must hold a permanent or contracted position at Academic Level A(6) or higher at the time of application and for the duration of the proposed activity.

b. Honorary and adjunct academic staff are not eligible to apply.

c. Individuals can be a PI on only one application per round.

d. Previous recipients of a FAPESP–UNIMELB SPRINT award may not reapply.

1.2 Eligibility for the exchange activities within the scope of this Call:

a. Principal Investigators, associated researchers, postdoctoral fellows and PhD students from UNIMELB are eligible to participate in exchange activities. Postdoctoral fellows and PhD students must hold a fellowship/scholarship during the planned exchange period.

b. The proposals must aim to respect the principle of reciprocity with regard to academic qualifications of those who will take part in the exchange activities.

c. Eligibility of research partners in the State of São Paulo should observe the items 3.1 and 7.1 of FAPESP call (www.fapesp.br/sprint/call122017).

d. Considering the principle of reciprocity, FAPESP exceptionally may either support PhD students from the State of São Paulo to take part in the scientific missions. In this case, the PhD student(s) must have an ongoing FAPESP fellowship during the planned exchange mission to the partner institution.

2. Fields of knowledge

This Call for Proposals invites research proposals in all fields of knowledge.

3. Duration of the project for the exchange of researchers

The maximum duration of each project is 24 months.

5. Funding principles

FAPESP will provide funding of up to the equivalent of AUD$10,000.00 per proposal, per year and UNIMELB will provide funding of up to AUD$10,000.00 per proposal, per year for the duration of the grant to cover research-related mobility expenses under the provisions of Clause 5 of the Scientific Cooperation Agreement established by the Parties (www.fapesp.br/en/7576).

6. Proposal characteristics f or UNIMELB researchers

Applications to UNIMELB must include:

a. A completed Application Form, available online: http://research.unimelb.edu.au/work-with-us/funding/internal/fapesp.

b. A Research Project description that is identical to the project description submitted to FAPESP. The description should be a maximum of five pages , written in English and authored jointly by the FAPESP and UNIMELB Principal Investigators. The Research Project must include:

i. A substantive description of the exchange activities and explanation of how these activities will contribute to the ongoing research project funded by FAPESP and to the research of the UNIMELB PI.

ii. A timeline detailing the date and duration of each planned exchange mission. Exchanges should be achievable within the project period and the funding of the Call.

iii. A description of each candidate’s contribution to the mission and his/her expertise to carry out the proposed activities.

iv. Performance indicators for the planned activities.

v. Any proposed events that will increase the impact of the exchange for UNIMELB and the Host Institution in the State of São Paulo. This might include, for example, planned seminars, short courses or visits to other institutions conducting research in the field.

7. Submission of proposals to UNIMELB

Save submissions as a single PDF file and enter into Themis Submissions for Head of Department approval. Once approved by the Head of Department, the UNIMELB Principal Investigator must email the proposal to international-research@unimelb.edu.au by the Call deadline.

8. Result of the analysis

Final results will be announced on FAPESP (www.fapesp.br) and UNIMELB (http://research.unimelb.edu.au/work-with-us/funding/internal/fapesp) web portals and by means of a communication to the interested PIs.

9. Contract for selected projects by UNIMELB

Successful proposals will be subject to the conditions set forth in the 2016 FAPESP–UNIMELB SPRINT Call for Proposals Guidelines available on the scheme website (http://research.unimelb.edu.au/work-with-us/funding/internal/fapesp).
