Specific requests for proposals submissions from researchers of the University of Wollongong (UOW)

FAPESP and University of Wollongong (UOW), signed a Cooperation Agreement for Research on April 6, 2017, aiming to implement scientific and technological cooperation between researchers from the UOW, Australia, and from the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, through the funding of joint research projects.

Under the referred Agreement, as a first action to promote such collaboration, FAPESP and UOW make public this Call for Proposals for the exchange of faculty and postdoctoral researchers under the terms and conditions of the SPRINT 2nd Edition 2017 (www.fapesp.br/sprint/call22017) and hereinafter set forth.

1. Eligibility from UOW side

1.1. Eligibility to submit proposals within the scope of this Call:

a. The lead applicant must be employed at UOW as continuing or fixed term academic staff at the time of application, with an appointment that extends for the duration of the award. The team may comprise academic (including honorary) staff and PhD students.

b. Individuals can be lead applicant on only one application per round.

1.2. Eligibility for the exchange activities within the scope of this Call

a. Academic staff and PhD students from UOW are eligible to participate in exchange activities. Postdoctoral fellows and PhD students must hold a fellowship/scholarship for the duration of the planned exchange period.

b. Where possible, the project should provide opportunities for Early Career Researchers (ECRs), although it is not compulsory to be an ECR to apply. For this scheme, an ECR means:

(i) PhD students enrolled at UOW who are part of an application led by an eligible staff member;

(ii) a researcher who has had their PhD awarded within five years of the date of application;

(iii) a researcher who received their PhD more than five years before the date of the application but who, due to career interruptions, has had less than the equivalent of five cumulative years of research experience.

c. The proposals must aim to respect the principle of reciprocity with regard to academic qualifications of those who will take part in the exchange activities.

d. Eligibility of research partners in the State of São Paulo should observe the items 3.1 and 4.2 of FAPESP call (www.fapesp.br/sprint/call22017).

e. Considering the principle of reciprocity, FAPESP exceptionally may support PhD students from São Paulo state to take part in the scientific missions. In this case, the PhD student(s) must have an ongoing FAPESP fellowship during the planned exchange mission to the partner institution.

Fields of knowledge

This Call for Proposals invites research proposals across all research disciplines.


3.
Duration of the project for the exchange of researchers

The maximum duration of each project is 24 months.

5.
Funding principles

5.1. FAPESP will provide funding of up to the equivalent of AU$10,000.00 (ten thousand dollars) per proposal per year and UOW will provide funding of up to AU$10,000.00 (ten thousand dollars) per proposal per year, for the duration of the grant to cover research-related mobility expenses, under the provisions of Clause 5 of the Scientific Cooperation Agreement established by the Parties (www.fapesp.br/en/10903). UOW and FAPESP will pay funds directly to their researchers.

5.2. Funds can be used for the exchange of researchers named on the application only, for research planning visits, workshops, and initial data collection activities, with the aim to develop research collaboration that develops and promotes research excellence and impact. FAPESP and UOW will fund up to 5 projects under this call for proposals.

5.3. Allowable expenses include travel costs such as economy class airfares, accommodation, per diem, local transport expenses, and costs to hold workshops.

5.4. Funds cannot be used for salary or direct research costs.


6.
Proposal characteristics for UOW researchers:

6.1. The application to UOW must include:

a. A completed UOW Application Form, available online: https://intranet.uow.edu.au/raid/internationalfunding/index.html

(Partner researchers from Sao Paolo should submit FAPESP’s Application Form following FAPESP’s submission guidelines.)

b. Two-page CVs of all proposed UOW team members and the Brazilian project leader. Include the date that the highest qualification was awarded.

c. A detailed proposed project budget, available online: https://intranet.uow.edu.au/raid/internationalfunding/index.html

d. A Research Project Description that is identical to the project description submitted to FAPESP. Applications must be bilateral. The description should be a maximum of five pages, written in English and authored jointly by the FAPESP and UOW applicants. The Research Project Description must include the following items, as described at item 6.1. at www.fapesp.br/sprint/call22017:

i. A substantive description of the exchange activities that clearly states how the exchange activities will contribute to the ongoing research project funded by FAPESP and to the research being carried by the partner researcher at UOW;

ii. A detailed timeline including the date and duration of each planned reciprocal exchange mission. Exchanges should be scheduled within the project period;

iii. Performance indicators for the planned activities, indicating the expected results;

iv. A description of each candidate’s contribution to the mission, explaining their expertise to carry out the foreseen activities;

v. A description of any proposed events that will increase the impact of the exchange for UOW and the Host Institution in the State of São Paulo, including, but not limited to, seminars, short courses, visits to other institutions conducting related research; and

vi. Description of potential joint research projects resulting from the exchange activities, which will sustain the collaboration beyond the term of the award.

e. Letter of Agreement of the Host Institution in the State of São Paulo to which the project lead from São Paulo is affiliated. The same document is required by FAPESP in item 6.2.3 at www.fapesp.br/sprint/call22017. The Letter of Agreement may be delivered after the notification of results of this call for proposals and before the grant agreement signature .


7.
Submission of proposals to UOW

Save applications as a single PDF file (File name: [Project lead surname]; SPRINT Application) and email to research-grants@uow.edu.au by 5pm, July 31st, 2017.


8.
Selection process

8.1 Applications will be assessed on a competitive basis at both UOW and FAPESP who will then jointly decide the awards. At UOW, assessment and ranking of applications will be undertaken by a review committee comprising the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation), Dean of Research, and ADRs.

8.2 UOW applications will be reviewed against the following selection criteria:

a. Quality and feasibility of the research project, including potential for the exchange to foster collaboration with leading international researcher(s) and lead to joint proposals to domestic and international funding agencies; and

b. Experience and track record of the participating researchers, including level of involvement of early career researchers.


9.
Result of the analysis

The results will be announced on FAPESP (www.fapesp.br) and UOW will communicate the outcomes to all UOW applicants.


10.
Contract for selected projects by UOW

Successful proposals will be subject to award terms and conditions set out in the UOW Conditions of Grant notice.


11.
Grant cancellation

FAPESP or UOW may cancel funding if, during the grant timeframe, a significant event justifies its cancellation in the assessment of the Joint Steering Committee, without prejudice of any other appropriate actions.
