Newton Fund Researcher Links Travel Grants provide financial support for early and established career researchers from the State of São Paulo to visit an institution in the UK and researchers from the UK to visit an institution in the State of São Paulo.

1. Objective
Researcher Links Travel Grants provide financial support for early and established career researchers to undertake an international research placement to strengthen links for future collaboration, built research capacity in developing economies, and enhance the researcher’s career opportunities.
Researchers that are based in the UK and affiliated with a recognised publicly funded research establishment or public or private Higher Education and Research Institution can apply for funding to visit a university or research institution in the State of São Paulo; the same way, researchers formally associated with public or private Higher Education or Research Institutions in the State of São Paulo can apply for funding to visit a university or research institution in the UK.
2. Eligibility within the scope of this Call
FAPESP considers eligible to submit proposals to this call and to participate of the exchange activities :
2.1. Principal Investigators of ongoing research projects funded by FAPESP within the following FAPESP funding modalities: Regular Research Awards (excluding mobility projects), Thematic Projects, Young Investigators, Research, Innovation and Dissemination Centers (CEPIDs/RIDCs), Public Education Research Program, Research in Public Policies, and Research Partnership for Technological Innovation (PITE). Co-Principal Investigators of ongoing Thematic Projects, CEPIDs/RIDCs and PITEs are also eligible to apply.
2.2. Each researcher can present only one proposal to this Call.
2.3. The ongoing research project linked to this proposal must have a minimum of six months duration left by the scheduled beginning of the mobility project.
2.4. FAPESP may accept proposals submitted to this call linked to research proposals that are still undergoing merit review. However, if the research proposal is still under analysis or has not been approved by the time the proposals in this Call are selected, the related mobility proposal will be cancelled.
3. Fields of knowledge
Under this call, the following research and innovation challenge areas will be given priority (please refer to Appendix 5 form more detailed information at https://www.britishcouncil.org/sites/default/files/latam_rltg_application_guidelines_v0.13.pdf. Multidisciplinary proposals are welcome, and may include Social Sciences and Arts and Humanities. The challenge areas are as follows:
3.1. Understanding habitats and species;
3.2. Biodiversity for sustainable livelihoods and bio-economy;
3.3. Global Climate Change, Biodiversity and ecosystems;
3.4. Maintaining and restoring natural capital.
4. Funding principles and Duration of the visits
4.1. Newton Fund will cover all the travel expenses within the scope of this call. The Travel Grant is calculated using five flat rate categories: Travel, Visa, Insurance, Subsistence, Consumables.
4.2. FAPESP may agree to fund further costs for researchers from the State of São Paulo on a case by case basis. In this case, only funds for travel (air tickets), health insurance and living allowances for researchers are covered.
4.3. Travel grants are not intended to cover travel costs for a conference abroad, or to fund travel as part of PhD studies;

4.5. The permitted duration of the visit is from 2 up to 12 weeks;
4.6. Travel must take place between 01 March 2018 to 31 August 2018.
5. Proposal characteristics
The proposal to be sent to FAPESP shall be composed of:
a. A copy of the application form for the Researcher Links Travel Grant (http://apply.gmt.britishcouncil.org/outreach/workbench.ofml). This application form must be filled in according to the instructions at https://www.britishcouncil.org/sites/default/files/latam_rltg_application_guidelines_v0.13.pdf;
b. Submission forms and additional documents, as required by FAPESP (see topic 5.1, below) and/or by the partner institutions (see item 9 of the guidelines at https://www.britishcouncil.org/sites/default/files/latam_rltg_application_guidelines_v0.13.pdf.
5.1. Additional documents required by FAPESP (to be filled in English):
5.1.1. Forms:
b. Researcher Registration Form for researcher from São Paulo to be filled in exceptionally in Portuguese;
c. CV Summaries of the Principal Investigators , both from São Paulo and from the UK (guidelines at fapesp.br/en/6351);
d. Budget forms including the requested funding for the team from the state São Paulo;
e. Worksheet for the exchange missions, both for the PI from São Paulo and from the PI from the UK Institution;
5.1.2. A Letter of Agreement between the Partner Institution and the Higher Education and Research Institution in the State of São Paulo to which the PI from São Paulo is affiliated, establishing how Intellectual Property rights, confidentiality, and publications will be treated jointly, in observance of the policies of each funding Party, considering SPRINT item 8 (www.fapesp.br/en/sprint). The Letter of Agreement is not mandatory for the submission of proposals, but no approved project will be contracted before the presentation of a copy of the signed Agreement;
5.1.3. Proposals related to ongoing FAPESP PITE projects must present a Statement of Consent by the company that co-funds the PITE project agreeing with the application to this CFP;
5.1.4. For proposals related to ongoing projects resulting from FAPESP partnership with other funding institutions, the Principal Investigator must present a Statement of Consent from the Principal(s) Investigator(s) of that ongoing grant, agreeing to the submission of Proposed in this Call.
5.2. Additional documents required by the Partner Institution:
The Principal Investigator at the Partner Institution must consider the Additional Documents described in www.britishcouncil.org/education/science/current-opportunities/regional-travel-grants-newton-latin-america, item 9.

7. Submission of proposals
7.1. Applicants must submit a completed online application form via the British Council system. A copy of this application must be submitted to FAPESP by the Principal Investigator from São Paulo. Proposal submitted to only one Party will not be considered.
7.2. No additions or clarifications will be accepted, except those explicitly and formally requested by FAPESP or by the UK Partner Institution;
7.3. Submissions to FAPESP can only be accepted in paper, via mail, to the following address: Rua Pio XI, 1500, Alto da Lapa, CEP 05468-901 – São Paulo/SP, with “Newton Fund Researcher Links Travel Grants - 2017” written on the envelope. Only proposals with a stamped postmark date within the deadline of this Call will be processed.
8. Analysis and selection
8.1. Proposals will undergo an eligibility check of the applicants from the State of São Paulo against the eligibility criteria given in these guidelines, item 2;
8.2. Only proposals which have clearly articulated relevance to economic development and social welfare of low-to middle-income countries will be considered for funding;

9. Result of the analysis
Final results will be announced at FAPESP website (www.fapesp.br) and at the webpages of the Partner Institutions and by means of a communication to the proponents.
10. Contract of the selected proposals
To FAPESP: selected proposals will be object of a grant contract (FAPESP) to be signed by the PI and a legal representative of the Higher Education and Research Institution to which he/she is affiliated.
11. Grant cancellation
FAPESP may cancel funding if, during the grant timeframe, a significant event justifies its cancellation in the assessment of the Joint Steering Committee, without prejudice of any other appropriate actions.
