Specific requests for proposals submissions from researchers of the Durham University
FAPESP and University of Durham signed a Cooperation Agreement for Research on July, 17, 2014, aiming to implement scientific and technological cooperation between researchers from the Durham University, UK and from the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, through the funding of joint research projects.
Under the referred Agreement, as a first action to promote such collaboration, FAPESP and Durham University make public this Call for Proposals for the exchange of faculty and postdoctoral researchers and PhD students under the terms and conditions of the SPRINT 3rd Edition 2017 (www.fapesp.br/sprint/call32017) and hereinafter set forth.
1. Eligibility from Durham University side
1.1. Eligibility to submit proposals within the scope of this Call:
a. Open to Durham University research staff in all departments. Strong preference will be given to projects that will be likely to promote sustained collaborative activity beyond the end point of the award period.
1.2. Eligibility for the exchange activities within the scope of this Call
a. The project lead must be a Durham researcher who holds a contract of employment for the full length of the proposed project. Other participants may include associated postdoctoral fellows and PhD students where appropriate.
(i) Respecting the principle of reciprocity, FAPESP will accept the participation of PhD fellows in scientific missions. Brazilian PhD candidates must have an ongoing FAPESP fellowship during the planned exchange mission to the partner institution.

The proposals must aim to respect the principle of reciprocity with regard to academic qualifications of those who will take part in the exchange activities.

Eligibility of research partners in the State of São Paulo should observe the items 3.1 and 4.2 of FAPESP call (www.fapesp.br/sprint/call32017).
2. Fields of knowledge
This Call for Proposals invites research proposals in all fields of knowledge.
3. Duration of the project for the exchange of researchers
The maximum duration of each project is 24 months.

5. Funding principles
5.1. FAPESP will provide funding of up to the equivalent of £10,000 (Ten thousand sterling pounds) per proposal per year and Durham University will provide funding of up to £10,000 (Ten thousand sterling pounds) per proposal per year, for the duration of the grant to cover research-related mobility expenses, under the provisions of Clause 5 of the Scientific Cooperation Agreement established by the Parties ( www.fapesp.br/en/8816).
5.2. FAPESP and Durham University will fund a maximum of 05 approved proposals.
6. Proposal characteristics for Durham University researchers:
The proposal shall be composed of:
a. A Research Projecthaving a maximum of five (5) pages of scientific content, written in English jointly by the Principal Investigator at the Host Institution in the State of São Paulo and the Principal Investigator at the Durham University. One copy of the research project shall be sent to fapesp and an identical copy to the Durham University.
6.1 As described at www.fapesp.br/sprint/call32017, the Research Project must include the following items:
a. A substantive description of the exchange activities, emphasizing their relevance. The proposal must state clearly how the exchange activities to be carried out by each team will contribute to the ongoing research project funded by FAPESP and to the research being carried by the partner researcher at Durham University;
b. Detailed schedule of the exchange missions to be carried out by the Durham University team at the São Paulo institution and the São Paulo team at the Durham University;
c. Performance indicators for the planned activities, indicating the expected results;
d. A description of each candidate’s contribution to the mission, explaining their expertise to carry out the foreseen activities;
e. Foreseen actions that will add to the impact of the exchange for the Durham University and for the Host Institution in the State of São Paulo, e.g. by means of seminars, short courses etc.;
f. Description of how the Principal Investigators in São Paulo and in the Durham University intend to prepare a joint research project, resulting from the exchange activities developed from the proposal submitted in this Call, to be submitted to research funding agencies accessible in their regions in order to create a medium-long-term collaboration (up to one page).
6.2 The following additional documents required by Durham University:
6.2.1 Additional documents
a. Letter of Support from Head of Department;
b. In addition, a copy of the following documents required by FAPESP (pleasesee en/10943, section 6.2.1) should also be provided to Durham;
- Research Proposal Form;
- CV Summaries of the Principal Investigators on both sides and of all candidates for the exchange activities (guidelines at www.fapesp.br/en/6351);
- Budget forms including the requested funding from both sides;
- Worksheet with all candidates for the exchange missions (according to those planned in timeline of the project - item 6.1 – b above);
6.2.2. A Letter of Agreement between the SP Partner Institution to which the PI from São Paulo is affiliated and Durham University, establishing how Intellectual Property rights, confidentiality, and publications will be treated jointly, in observance of the policies of each funding Party, considering SPRINT item 8 (www.fapesp.br/en/sprint). The Letter of Agreement is not mandatory for the submission of proposals, but no approved project will be contracted before the presentation of a copy of the signed Agreement. The same document is required by FAPESP in item 6.2.2 at www.fapesp.br/sprint/call32017. The Letter of Agreement may be delivered after the notification of results of this call for proposals and before the grant agreement signature .
7. Submission of proposals to Durham University
Submissions can only be accepted electronically and should be submitted to: fiona.o’carroll@durham.ac.uk. Proposals submitted by any other means will not be accepted. Late submissions will be returned.
8. Result of the analysis
The results will be announced on FAPESP (www.fapesp.br) and DURHAM UNIVERSITY (www.dur.ac.uk/international) web portals and by means of a communication to the interested PIs.
9. Contract for selected projects by DURHAM UNIVERSITY
Selected proposals will subject to the conditions set forth in a letter of award.
10. Grant cancellation
FAPESP or Durham University may cancel funding if, during the grant timeframe, a significant event justifies its cancellation in the assessment of the Joint Steering Committee, without prejudice of any other appropriate actions. Durham University may, at the absolute discretion of the University, cancel funding of a Durham University researcher if the applicant is found to be in breach of Durham University’s published regulations (including but not limited to HR policies and procedures), without prejudice of any other appropriate actions which the University may take.
