SPRINT – 3rd Edition 2017: Guidelines University of California – San Diego

Specific requests for proposals submissions from researchers of the University of California – San Diego (UCSD)

The UC San Diego Stem Cell Program is committed to collaborating with other research institutions to maximize resources, facilitate research, and accelerate understanding for basic stem cell science research.

FAPESP and UC San Diego signed a Cooperation Agreement for Research on February 9th, 2017, aiming to implement scientific and technological cooperation between researchers from UC San Diego, USA, and from the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, through the funding of joint research projects.

To promote this partnership, FAPESP and UCSD are issuing a Call for Proposals for the exchange of faculty and postdoctoral researchers under the terms and conditions of the SPRINT 3rd Sprint 2017 Agreement (www.fapesp.br/sprint/call32017) and hereinafter set forth.

1. Eligibility from UCSD side

1.1. Eligibility to submit proposals within the scope of this Call:

a. Applicants must be a current professor or adjunct professor.

1.2. Eligibility for the exchange activities within the scope of this Call

a. Applicants must attend the 2018 Cell and Gene Meeting on the Mesa in La Jolla, CA unless granted an exception by the Stem Cell Program due to the timing of the proposed activities.

b. The winning applicant(s) will present their data at a poster session at the designated meeting.

c. The candidates must be senior researchers and postdoctoral fellows whose primary position is in laboratory of the applicant PI.

d. All proposals must involve human stem cell research.

Note:

  • The proposals must aim to respect the principle of reciprocity regarding academic qualifications of those who will take part in the exchange activities.

  • Eligibility of research partners in the State of São Paulo should observe the items 3.1 and 4.2 of FAPESP call (www.fapesp.br/sprint/call32017). 

2. Fields of knowledge

This Call for Proposals invites research proposals in Stem Cell Biology, Medicine, Engineering, Chemistry and closely related fields. The research outlined in the application must involve human stem cells.

3. Duration of the project for the exchange of researchers

The maximum duration of each project is 1 year.

4. Timeline

Call announced by FAPESP and UCSD:

August 1st, 2017

Closing date for submission of proposals:

October 30th, 2017

Successful proposals notified after:

January 26th, 2018

5. Funding principles

5.1. FAPESP will provide funding of up to the equivalent of US$ 10,000 (ten thousand dollars) per proposal per year and UCSD will provide funding of up to US$ 10,000.00 (ten thousand dollars) per proposal per year, for the duration of the grant to cover research-related mobility expenses, under the provisions of Clause 5 of the Scientific Cooperation Agreement established by the Parties (www.fapesp.br/en/10839).

5.2. FAPESP and UCSD will fund a maximum of 3 approved proposals.

6. Proposal characteristics for UCSD researchers:

The proposal shall be composed of:

a. A Research Project having a maximum of one (1) page of scientific content, written in English jointly by the Principal Investigator at the Host Institution in the State of São Paulo and the Principal Investigator at the UCSD. One copy of the Research Project shall be sent to FAPESP and an identical copy to the UCSD.

b. The application must also include a biosketch for the applicant PI and postdoctoral or junior faculty candidate. Each biosketch cannot exceed two (2) pages. The total proposal including scientific content and biosketches cannot exceed five (5) total pages.

6.1 As described at www.fapesp.br/sprint/call32017, the Research Project must include the following items:

a. PI Name, candidate postdoc or junior faculty member’s name, institution and department, and title of the research project(s);

b. A substantive description of the exchange activities, emphasizing their relevance. The proposal must state clearly how the exchange activities to be carried out by each team will contribute to the ongoing research project funded by FAPESP and to the research being carried by the partner researcher at UCSD ;

c. Detailed schedule of the exchange missions to be carried out by the partner team at the São Paulo institution and the São Paulo team at the UCSD;

d. Performance indicators for the planned activities, indicating the expected results;

e. A description of each candidate’s contribution to the mission, explaining their expertise to carry out the foreseen activities;

f. Foreseen actions that will add to the impact of the exchange for the UCSD and for the Host Institution in the State of São Paulo, e.g. by means of seminars, short courses etc.;

g. Description of how the Principal Investigators in São Paulo and in the UCSD intend to prepare a joint research project, resulting from the exchange activities developed from the proposal submitted in this Call, to be submitted to research funding agencies accessible in their regions in order to create a medium-long-term collaboration (up to one page).

6.2 The following additional documents required by UCSD:

6.2.1 Biosketches or CVs of the Sponsor/Applicant PI and their postdoctoral fellow candidate. 

6.2.2 Letter of Agreement of the Host Institution in the State of São Paulo to which the PI from São Paulo is affiliated. The same document is required by FAPESP in item 6.2.2 at www.fapesp.br/sprint/call32017. The Letter of Agreement may be delivered after the notification of results of this call for proposals and before the grant agreement signature .

7. Submission of proposals to UCSD

8. Result of the analysis

The results will be announced on FAPESP (www.fapesp.br) and UCSD web portals and by means of a communication to the interested PIs.

9. Contract for selected projects by UCSD

Selected proposals will subject to travel and procurement guidelines of UCSD.

10. Grant cancellation

FAPESP or UCSD may cancel funding if, during the grant timeframe, a significant event justifies its cancellation in the assessment of the Joint Steering Committee, without prejudice of any other appropriate actions.
