Call for Proposals: FAPESP - CONFAP - CNPq – Newton Fund - THE UK ACADEMIES 2019: Fellowships, Research Mobility, and Young Investigator Grants for UK researchers in Brazil Versão em português
Important Notice (27 May 2020):
Upon consideration of the FAPESP's official statement “Letter to the scientific community on emergency measures/COVID-19”, available in Portuguese at www.fapesp.br/14256, and considering the uncertainty of national and international travel restrictions imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, FAPESP will cancel Research Awards which have as essential items costs related to travel. The support opportunities Researcher Mobility and Research Fellowships are therefore cancelled for this call for proposals. Young Investigator Awards will be analised as usual.
As soon as the the situation is normalised, proposals may be (re)submitted to FAPESP in the regular funding opportunity “Visiting Researcher Award”.
FAPESP hopes for your understanding on the importance of these actions and exceptionality of the circumstances.

1 Introduction
1.1 FAPESP, through CONFAP (National Council for the State Funding Agencies), the Newton Fund, and The UK Academies (The Academy of Medical Sciences, the British Academy, the Royal Academy of Engineering, and the Royal Society of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to encourage and support increased capacity in Brazil in the area of research and innovation (www.fapesp.br/8937).
1.2 The Newton Fund forms part of the UK’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) commitment, which is monitored by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). ODA funded activity focuses on outcomes that promote the long-term sustainable growth of Newton Fund partner countries and is administered with the promotion of the economic development and welfare of partner countries as its main objective. Funds investment have a counterpart in partner countries, FAPESP being one of Newton`s partners in Brazil.
1.3 In the context of this Memorandum of Understanding, FAPESP and other Brazilian participating institutions offer fellowships and grants to visiting researchers from the United Kingdom for the development of scientific research in Universities or Research Institutions in the State of Sao Paulo, or elsewhere in Brazil. The UK Academies, in turn, launch their calls for proposals to select Brazilian researchers to spend time doing research in the UK. Since 2014 annual calls for proposals have been launched to select Brazilian researchers interested in working in cooperation with institutions from the UK (previous calls published here: en/9552)
1.4 This opportunity is open to interested researchers affiliated with research and Higher Education institutions from the State of Sao Paulo and/or from the United Kingdom, who should follow the guidelines from the Call for Proposals (available here) and also the guidance below.
2 Areas of knowledge
Proposals in all areas of knowledge will be welcome.
3 Support Opportunities
This call for proposals invites applications in three categories: Research Mobility, Research Fellowship, or Young Investigator Grant:
a. Research Mobility
FAPESP Opportunity: Visiting Researcher Award
The main objective is to ensure collaboration between researchers in the development of ongoing research grants, or grants about to start, in the host institution in the State of Sao Paulo. Researcher from Sao Paulo not necessarily coordinate an ongoing FAPESP grant.
Please note only one single mission is supported by FAPESP, not multiple visits. Three types of mission can be considered:
i. One single mission from five to fifteen days:

One return airline ticket and travel insurance OR
-
Daily support to be paid according to FAPESP´s per diem table of values.
ii. One single mission from fifteen days to up to one month:
-
One return airline ticket and travel insurance, and
-
Daily support to be paid according to FAPESP´s per diem table of values.
iii. One single mission from one to twelve months:
-
One return airline ticket and travel insurance, and
-
A monthly stipend with value ranging from R$ 10.680,00 (Young Researcher) to R$ 15.870,00 (Full Professor). The level is to be suggested by the host investigator and confirmed by FAPESP upon merit review.
b. Research Fellowship
FAPESP Opportunity: Visiting Researcher Award
The main objective is to ensure collaboration between researchers in the development of ongoing research grants in the host institution in the State of Sao Paulo. The UK researcher would spend from 6 to 12 months in the State of Sao Paulo. For this scheme, the UK researcher must be associated to a FAPESP PI (host researcher) in charge of an ongoing FAPESP grant in the opportunities listed in the eligibility requirements (below).
Expenses covered by this award are:
i. A monthly stipend with value ranging from from R$ 10.680,00 (Young Researcher) to R$ 15.870,00 (Full Professor) (the level is to be suggested by the host investigator and confirmed by FAPESP upon merit review), from six (6) to up to twelve (12) months.
ii. Airline ticket and health insurance.
iii. Scientific Initiation Scholarship for one undergraduate student to be supervised by the visiting researcher.
iv. The PI in charge of the grant to which the visitor will be associated may request to FAPESP supplementary funds in the ongoing project in the amount up to R$ 25,000.00 for every six months of stay of the visitor. This grant is to be used for research related consumable materials, services, and travel.
c. Young Investigators Award
FAPESP Opportunity: Young Investigators Grant
FAPESP will offer an opportunity for young investigators from the UK to start a research career at a University or Research institution in the State of São Paulo through its Young Investigator Grants. Candidates shall submit proposals in the FAPESP Young Investigator Grant Program (www.fapesp.br/en/6251).
Expenses that may be covered by this grant are:
i. Equipment, consumables, services, and travel necessary to the 5-year research project.
ii. A monthly fellowship for the Young Investigator of R$ 8.377,50 (tax-free) to be paid for up to four years or until he/she obtains a permanent position in a university or research institution in the State of São Paulo.
iii. A quota of scholarships for undergraduate students who will work in parts of the research project (Scientific Initiation) and a quota of Masters and Doctorate (applicant without MSc degree scholarships for graduate students, to be selected and supervised by the Young Investigator.
iv. In addition to the approved budget for the discriminated items mentioned above FAPESP includes a value equal to 15% as an overhead to be used in direct research infrastructure or non-anticipated expenses (e.g. travel, visitors) necessary for the project, and another 10% that is awarded as an institutional overhead.
3.1 Eligibility requirements
a. Researcher Mobility
There must be a host researcher affiliated in a Research institution in the State of São Paulo, but not necessarily in charge of an ongoing FAPESP grant.
b. Research Fellowships
The UK researcher must be associated to a FAPESP PI in charge or as a principal investigator of an ongoing grant of the following types: Thematic, Young Investigator, Engineering Research Centers, Research in Public Policies, or Research, Innovation and Dissemination Centers.
c. Young Investigator Grants
The UK researcher must have a PhD or equivalent title and an outstanding research track record, and typically 2-5 years post-doctoral experience in a research group in the UK. Before starting elaborating the project, interested researchers must consult FAPESP regarding their eligibility, by email (chamada-ukacademies@fapesp.br). After receiving the consultation, FAPESP will consult Newton Fund and answer to candidates within 20 days.
4. Procedures for preparation and submission of research proposals 4.1 Instructions for the preparation of research proposals
a. Research Mobility
Each proposal should have a Researcher (PI) based in the State of Sao Paulo and a Researcher based in the UK, and both must have an active registration on SAGe;
i. The research proposal should be devised and written by both researchers in collaboration;
ii. The research proposal must be written in English;
iii. Proposals should have a Start Date planned anytime between January 2021 to January 2022.
b. Research Fellowship
i. Each proposal should have a Researcher (PI) based in the State of Sao Paulo and a Researcher based in the UK, and both must have an active registration on SAGe;
ii. The research proposal should be devised and written by both researchers in collaboration;
iii. The research proposal must be written in English;
iv. Researchers interested in the Research Fellowship category should include this information in the “Observation” filed in SAGe as well as include the ongoing FAPESP grant as Linked Process;
v. Proposals should have a Start Date planned anytime between January 2021 to January 2022.
c. Young Investigator Grant
i. Proposal will be submitted by the researcher from the UK, through SAGe
ii. Additional documents needed for the presentation of this proposal are listed in this link, en/6251, but also available in the SAGe system (including some templates);
iii. Proposals should have a Start Date planned anytime between January 2021 to January 2022.
4.2 Submission of proposals
a. Proposals must be submitted to FAPESP through a customized path of the SAGe system by the applicant before the deadline. Proposals submitted by any other means will not be accepted;
b. Research Mobility and Research Fellowship applications must be submitted in the name of the researcher affiliated with a research institution in the State of Sao Paulo. Both the Sao Paulo and the UK researcher must have an active SAGe registration, and “confirm participation” in the proposal before finalising the submission. An active SAGe registration demands the attachment of a photo ID and every information requested that is marked as mandatory (*);
c. Researchers interested in this opportunity should follow calendar of the Call for Proposals “CONFAP - CNPq – THE UK ACADEMIES 2019 Fellowships, Research Mobility, and Young Investigator Grants for UK researchers in Brazil;”
d. Deadline for submission of proposals is 29 May 2020;
e. No proposal will be accepted after the closing date for submission, nor will any addendum or explanation be accepted, unless those explicitly and formally requested by FAPESP;
f. Proposals that are not in accordance with the guidelines presented here will be returned without merit review.
