Márcio de Castro Silva Filho appointed Scientific Director of FAPESP Versão em português

Márcio de Castro Silva Filho has been appointed Scientific Director of FAPESP. The appointment was announced in the Official Gazette of São Paulo State (Diário Oficial do Estado de São Paulo) on April 6.
Márcio de Castro headed the three-name list of candidates drawn up by FAPESP’s Board of Trustees at a meeting on March 15. He takes office on April 27.
He is a professor in the Department of Genetics at the University of São Paulo’s Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture (ESALQ-USP) and Pro-Rector of Graduate Studies for the university.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in agricultural engineering from the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA) and a PhD in plant molecular biology from the University of Louvain in Belgium. He has been a visiting scholar at the University of Melbourne in Australia and at Ohio State University in the United States.
Márcio de Castro is a titular member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC) and the São Paulo State Academy of Sciences (ACIESP). He is a former president of the Brazilian Society of Genetics (SBG), a former titular member of the National Technical Commission for Biosafety (CTNBio), and a former chair of the National Forum of Pro-Rectors of Research and Graduate Studies (FOPROP).
He has held several posts at CAPES, the Ministry of Education’s Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel, where he has been Head of Biological Sciences I, Director of International Relations, and Director of Programs and Scholarships in Brazil.
