FAPESP and the Medical Research Council will provide a total of up to £6 million to support research on the use of artificial intelligence in biomedical applications relevant to Brazil.

FAPESP and the Medical Research Council (MRC) are launching a call for proposals to support collaborative research on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Health. This is the fifth call launched in the history of the cooperation agreement between the institutions. The MRC is one of the UK research councils linked to UK Research & Innovation (UKRI), the British scientific funding agency.

In addition to supporting mobility and scientific exchange between the United Kingdom and the state of São Paulo, the call aims to develop new partnerships between British and São Paulo researchers in the areas of "Digital Health/AI" and "Social Determinants of Health".

The purpose of this call is to fund high-quality collaborative research projects focused on addressing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for biomedical and healthcare applications relevant to Brazil. Projects should aim to generate real-world impact by addressing urgent health needs and barriers to the use of AI in biomedical and health research.

The call will subsidize projects according to two types of aid. In "Grants for Building Partnerships", new or early-stage partnerships signed by researchers at the beginning of their careers will be contemplated; these proposals will apply for support from FAPESP through the Regular Research Grant modality and up to £100,000 from the MRC.

"Research Grants" type comprises large-scale research proposals in Brazil and the United Kingdom led by more established groups, which will compete for funding from FAPESP through the Thematic Research Grant modality and MRC contributions of up to £500,000.

Projects of both types are expected to have a duration of three years, starting in February 2025 and concluding by the end of January 2028. On FAPESP's side, researchers linked to public or private higher education or research institutions in the state of São Paulo that meet the norms of each type of grant will be considered eligible, despite the exceptions provided for in this call.

The MRC and FAPESP will provide up to £3 million each for this initiative. The MRC will support this activity under the umbrella of the International Scientific Partnerships Fund (ISPF), designed to support British researchers to work with international partners on key contemporary themes.

Proposals must be submitted in English by the Principal Investigator (PI) of the state of São Paulo to FAPESP through the SAGe system by June 28.

The call for proposals is published at: https://fapesp.br/en/16630.
