In this opportunity launched with the National Science Foundation, researchers will be able to submit proposals to FAPESP in Regular Research Grant and Thematic Project funding schemes.

FAPESP announces a new opportunity, together with the Directorate of Geosciences (GEO) of the National Science Foundation (NSF), to fund bilateral research projects between researchers from the United States and the state of São Paulo.

Proposals for scientific cooperation can be submitted in the following programs of the NSF Geosciences Directorate: Division of Atmospheric and Geospatial Sciences; Division of Earth Sciences; Division of Ocean Sciences; and Polar Program Office.

In this opportunity, the lead agency system will be adopted for the submission and evaluation of research proposals, with NSF acting as lead agency. In this way, the projects will be evaluated by the NSF in the programs made available by its Directorate of Geosciences.

If the proposal is recommended, NSF will bear the costs of the research team based in the United States and FAPESP will bear the costs of the research team based in the state of São Paulo.

FAPESP will be funded through the following modalities: Regular Research Grants or Thematic Project Research Grant. All the rules of these Grants will apply, with the following maximum values of R$ 600,000 and R$ 7 million, respectively, defined for the project budget. FAPESP's usual eligibility criteria apply to the modalities offered.

In order to stimulate international collaborations, this Call will allow the submission of Thematic Projects by Co-Principal Investigators (Co-PI) in ongoing or under analysis in the modalities Thematic Projects, PITE, RIDCs and ERCs/ARCs – provided that they are justified and tackle areas that do not match those of projects underway or under analysis.

Submissions must be made by the principal investigators of both parties to the agencies of their respective countries. FAPESP will receive proposals exclusively through the SAGe System (https://fapesp.br/sage). The Call will be open throughout 2025; the only requirement is that the EOI (Expression of Interest) be submitted to the NSF 60 days in advance of the date by which the bilateral consortium intends to submit the full proposal.
