The FAPESP-Microsoft Research Virtual Institute, result of a cooperation agreement signed between the two institutions in April 2007, is a pioneering initiative in Brazil that binds the public and private sectors in order to stimulate the research in ICT.
The Institute just closed its 4th RFP, which will support fundamental world-class research in information and communications technologies (ICT). The goal of the call is to select and finance projects that explore the application of computer science challenges of fundamental research in areas such as education, health and welfare or energy production and several other disciplines related to Sciences of the environment.
Within the framework of the call, the academic research has two essential ingredients: creating new scientific knowledge and communication of results to the world academic community. Projects must have great impact through: 1) new research, creative and interesting for the advancement of ICT; and 2) publication and dissemination of knowledge and experiences to the world academic community.
