Abstract: The São Paulo School of Advanced Science on Neglected Diseases Drug Discovery – focus on Kinetoplastids (SPSAS-ND3) will be hosted in CNPEM - Campinas-SP, Brazil in June, 14th to 24th, 2015. The SPSAS is funded by FAPESP (Sao Paulo Research Foundation) and aims to support courses in advanced themes in science and technology, contributing to the formation of young researchers and attraction of both national and international scientific talents to Sao Paulo state. SPSAS-ND3 will focus on multidisciplinary aspects of drug discovery applied to Chagas disease, African tripanosomiasis and leishmaniasis, introducing students to the basics of drug discovery science and also to cutting-edge research on the field. The course is structured in both lectures and practical activities covering high throughput and high content screening, structural biology and virtual screening, screening data analysis, medicinal chemistry, lead optimization, in vitro and in vivo ADME, and in vivo models for pharmacokinetics and efficacy studies.

Abstract: The main goal of the SyncLight 2015 is to show to young researchers (MSc, PhD and Post-doc fellows) what synchrotron light offers in the form of new tools for their research. We intend to show that there are numerous new possibilities that appeared in the last decade, particularly those exploring bright nanometer size x-ray beams. This school will provide training for the students in the field of physics, chemistry, biology, geosciences, medicine and materials science engineering, among others. The specific interdisciplinary character of the school will contribute to fruitful exchanges between researchers belonging to these different disciplines.

Abstract: Presented by the São Paulo School of Advanced Science, this course is designed for students at the undergraduate, graduate or postdoctoral levels from institutions world-wide, including the Americas, Caribbean, Europe, and malaria-endemic countries in Africa and Asia. Global public health professionals, private sector professionals, academic faculty, scientists and researchers, malaria control program administrators, and field-based personnel from these regions should also attend. Abstract: The SPCodingSchool is a two week long school on coding and information theory which will be held in Brazil in January 2015. Leading researchers in the area will give both introductory courses (during the first week) and advanced courses (in the second one). The introductory courses are aimed to students that have consistent mathematical background but are not necessarily acquainted with coding and information theory. Besides the mini-courses and selected lectures, participants will be enrolled as teams in research problems that will be presented in advance.

Abstract: SPASECS is a special edition of the already traditional School of Electrochemistry that is annually organized at IQUSP. This year, with the financial support of São Paulo State Foundation (FAPESP), eight days of intensive theoretical and laboratorial electrochemistry course together with conferences on lithium-ion batteries, lithium-air batteries, fuel cell and electrochemical capacitors will take place with the participation of specialists from Brazilian and foreign Universities. The target audience is graduate students and young doctors from all over the world. The number of participants is limited to 80 to ensure access to equipment to develop the experiments in small groups. We have the sponsorship of the International Society of Electrochemistry and the Journal “Energy & Environmental Science” (EES), published by The Royal Society of Chemistry, to offer 4 awards for the student poster section. Abstract: The SPSAS Advances in Predictive Modeling and Quantitative Microbiological Risk Assessment of Foods aims at study the behavior of microorganisms in foods and their impact on safety and quality, through the use of predictive modeling tools and microbiological risk assessment. In the last decade, these tools caused a great impact on research in microbiology, processing, control and food legislation, but many challenges remain, especially in relation to the basic concepts, applications and benefits of predictive models. The school puts together 25 renowned experts on the subject, from the country and abroad. The talks and presentations will be published in a special issue of the Brazilian Journal of Microbiology.

Abstract: The ESPCA-Chemistry 2013 is organized by São Paulo State University (UNESP), coordinated by Prof. Vanderlan Bolzani and supported by FAPESP. All ESPCA’s speakers are highly qualified scientists and leaders in their fields, including several invited foreign scientists. The theme of this school will be Bioorganic Chemistry, involving aspects of natural products, medicinal chemistry, synthesis and spectroscopic methods. We also have planned some social events to stir-up discussions between students and professors and thus, make this year’s School more fruitful and enjoyable. The ESPCA committee will select 50 foreign students and 50 Brazilian students to be awarded with financial support for meals, transport and accommodation for this event. Abstract: The School wants to perform an advanced program for rethinking macroeconomics and the theory of economic development. The program is based on the successful experience of the advanced program of Cambridge-Rethinking Macroeconomics and the Theory of Development (Laporde) which was held in Cambridge, United Kingdom, for eight years. The program will select a group of about 100 university students in developing countries with focus on Latin America and other developing economies, and this program will consist of lectures, debates, workshops and research with leading scholars on the theme. After being taught in Cambridge for eight years, the course has been offered at Fundação Getúlio Vargas, free of charge to participants. The students will have the opportunity to participate in the frontier research carried out from critical perspectives on key issues in economic development and macroeconomics. The teaching will be carried out through lectures and discussions provided for by some of the high-profile world scholars on the subject. Given the level of teachers, this is a unique course on macroeconomic theories and unconventional economic development.

Abstract: The São Paulo School of Advanced Science on e-Science for Bioenergy Research (SPSAS e-SciBioenergy) aims to disseminate important e-science topics, such as: biomedical image analysis and visualization; computer-oriented approaches and applications; data-oriented approaches and applications; extreme scale approaches and applications; high-performance computing; new e-science application areas and opportunities; scientific databases and workflows; systems biology and bioinformatics. Modern science is interdisciplinary and data-intensive. Ten years ago, the problem was how to obtain data. Today, the bottleneck is the need for new computational strategies and tools so that scientists can manage these massive volumes of heterogeneous data. This launched the basis of the so-called e-Science: the combination of advanced research in computer science and mathematical modeling to allow and accelerate research in other knowledge domains.

Abstract: Comparative oncology represents a unique and ideal platform for cancer scientists to connect basic, clinical, and translational research that will continue to lead to effective cancer therapies and prevention strategies. Abstract: São Paulo School of Advanced Studies on the Globalization of Culture in the Nineteenth Century mantains maintains close liaison with the international cooperation project "Atlantic Circulation of Printed Matter: globalization of culture in the 19th century", coordinated by Marcia Abreu (Unicamp) and Jean-Yves Moilier (UVSQ), and with the thematic project, coordinated by Marcia Abreu. The international cooperation project brings together 40 researchers from 23 esearch institutions and four countries (England, France, Portugal and Brazil). The school has as subject the cultural globalization held between 1789 and 1914, focusing on the circulation of books, printing materials and performances in Brazil, France, Portugal and England. The so called “long 19^th century” knew a significant expansion on reading and an extraordinary technological modification which largely altered the way prints were produced and their relation to culture. With such a objective, the school puts together researchers from the four regarded countries in a five days long meeting.

Abstract: The overarching goal of SPSAS-evo (São Paulo School of Advanced Science Evolution) is to provide opportunities for close interaction among students and leading experts conducting cutting edge research in evolution, as well as to stimulate interdisciplinary discussion about hot topics in evolutionary biology. A historical discipline by definition, evolutionary biology nevertheless relies both on experimental evidence and historical inference to address phenomena that occur in time scales ranging from a few days to billions of years. Interdisciplinary par excellence, its conceptual breakthroughs will most likely occur when experts from different areas are brought together with the goal of exchanging and synthesizing knowledge. The school will have a total of 78 hours (at least, depending on the time spent in periods of free study by students), with nine days involving practical directed studies classes, round tables, exhibition of research lines in development in the State of São Paulo, group work to produce proposals for scientific articles and conceptual web pages, discussion of its projects with teachers and speakers, and two days with visits monitored the plant examples of research of the State of São Paulo. There are three main thematic axes, synergistic, "Microevolution", "Macroevolution" and "Integrated Approaches". There will be 15 teachers (9 foreign institutions and national institutions 6) and 9 speakers (all in the State of São Paulo). The school will offer 60 positions being at least 30 of these for foreign students from the undergraduate to post-doctoral fellows. Our expectation is to promote future collaborations between students of the school and its faculty, attract young talent from the area for studies in the State of São Paulo and lead to a better level of studies and publications of all involved at the School.

Abstract: Advanced Topics in Computational Biology – Agrochemical and Drug Design aims to provide an update on recent research in computational biology, involving areas such as biotechnology, structural biology, high performance computing, drug design, plant protection, cancer research etc. In addition, the course encourages the development of collaborative research projects among Brazilian and foreign scientists. The scientific program covers the following areas: computationally based approaches to agrochemical and drug discovery; application and limitations of structural data in structure-guided ligand and drug design; docking algorithms and scoring functions; combating drug resistance; selecting appropriate targets for agrochemical design; virtual high throughput screening; protein structure function analysis; fragment based drug design; computational approaches to predicting aqueous solubility. Abstract: The São Paulo School on Global Climate Modeling - SPSGCM was conducted by eight researchers from Brazil, USA, Germany and India, with thirty doctoral students and post-docs in the areas of Earth Sciences. The focus is the climatic aspects of the connections between continent and ocean, involving continental hydrology, river discharge into the oceans and atmospheric teleconnections. The School uses suites of models and programs of the Brazilian Earth System Model (BESM), and is connected by Linux remote terminals to the supercomputer Tupã (CRAY XE6), of the FAPESP Research Program on Global Climate Change (RPGCC) and the Climate Network, installed at INPE in Cachoeira Paulista, were it was conducted integrations corresponding to more than 100 years of the coupled version ocean-atmosphere of the BESM model, with variables such as river discharges as sensitivity tests. Abstract: The two-week course was attended by 50 Brazilian and foreign students, selected for their potential in the development of research in the area, and 26 speakers: 15 Brazilians (12 in the State of São Paulo) and 11 foreigners (Argentina, Australia, Canada, England, Scotland, and USA) with extensive scientific production in the knowledge area of the course. The event consisted of lectures, practical classes, presentations, discussion and technical visits to different teaching and research institutions. Due to its wide range and multidisciplinarity, the schedule was divided into four themes: "Genetics of host resistance to parasites", "future prospects of techniques for target validation, drug and vaccine development and reversion of endoparasites" resistance, "in vitro Methods for the diagnosis of and resistance to the prospect of new bioactive substances" and "new perspectives for the control of ectoparasites of ruminants", covering advanced areas in science and technology.

Abstract: The School explored conceptual bases, methods of analysis and complex network theory applications in ecology. Graphic interactions networks have always been one of the central problems in ecology, and its recent momentum gained with study the theory of complex networks. Currently, this is one of the most active areas of research in Ecology. Among the many fields of application of the theory of networks in Ecology are the structural and dynamic response prediction of ecological communities with different types of environmental changes, from the more locals to global changes; models of biodiversity conservation or genetic conservation in complex and fragmented landscapes; and epidemiological models. The main thematic areas of the School were: (1) research into interactive networks of different types (mutualísticas, plant-herbivore, parasite-host) between species in ecological communities; (2) spatial networks in landscapes and structurally complex areas. The School was conducted by three Brazilian researchers and five internationally recognised researchers. The course lasted 9 days, with 70 hours of activity covering lectures, seminars, student presentations and posters sessions "clinics" for discussion of student research, data analysis practices and workgroup projects. 40 vacancies were offered to graduate students or postdoctoral students. The expectation was to receive 20 Brazilian students, from different States, and 20 foreign students, of which about half of Latin America. The project was promoted by the Unicamp, USP and ABECO, being promoted through international networks of scientific societies, to which the ABECO is integrated, and in prestigious journals.

Abstract: The 1st São Paulo School of Translational Science was held by the Hospital AC Camargo with support of FAPESP, bringing together 40 researchers from eight countries to discuss, from the perspective of translational medicine, issues such as drug development, genomics, immunology, neuroscience and cancer. Translational Medicine is a branch of medical research that seeks to connect directly the scientific research to the treatment of patients. As predicted, 100 selected students received scholarships and support for transportation, lodging and meals. The speakers invited to the course were from over 20 of the leading universities in the United States, Canada, France, Italy, Sweden, Portugal, Argentina and Brazil. The participation of renowned researchers secured the visibility for the event-as well as the theme itself, since Translational Science approximates the basic science to clinical application.
